5 O’Clock Shadow Series

For this series, we took a walk downtown for a shoot and I ended up taking some shots of Dre behind the scenes. While we were talking I saw an opportunity to get candids of his hand gestures while he was doing his thing. They turned out to be perfect depth-of-field pictures and still captured his personality. Part of what compelled me to take them was also the lighting of the neon sign behind him, which happened to be the 5 O’Clock Shadow barber shop.

The first few pictures were taken with a Sony A7ii, and then when it was time for him to shoot with that camera I switched to my phone (Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra). I opened Lightroom and edited the first one to see how it would turn out and made a preset based on that for the rest of them. - Mila

Lifeline Series

I had this idea brewing back in June and July and it was beautifully executed. We both had a vision after I explained exactly what the pictures were meant to represent.

So, after location scouting for a day or two, we found the perfect parking lot, until the lights shut off after setting up and taking the first photo. We then drove around from place to place, until finally landing on the parking lot next to Staples. Now here I am, in just a flannel, holding a string of lights, meant to represent the years of struggling and searching, I finally reached a point in my life and healing journey, where it was time to let go of the this heavily emotional, self destructive baggage that I had been carrying for so many years. The weight of finally dropping that metaphorical lifeline was something I can never fully describe, but the feeling was so freeing and emotional all on it's own.

For this shoot Dre used a Nikon D5300 and we edited them in Pixlr and Lightroom. - Mila
